Math Challenge October 19

The Star-Spangled Banner was written long ago. When the song was written, the flag had 15 stripes and 15 stars. Today the American flag has 13 stripes and 50 stars. The 13 stripes are for the 13 American colonies. The 50 stars are for the 50 states. How many more stripes were on the old flag? How many more stars are on the new flag?

Star Spangled Banner

The Star Spangled Banner
By Francis Scott Key
Oh say! Can you see, by the dawn’s early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight,
O’er the ramparts we watch’d, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
Oh, say, does that Star-Spangled Banner yet wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
