Happy Birthday to the Florida Everglades!
Did you know?
Everglades National Park celebrates it's birthday on December 6th! On December 6th, 1947, the government set aside 1.5 million acres of protected land (a small fraction of its original size) as Everglades National Park.
Before there was an Everglades National Park there was Everglades, the ecosystem. This Everglades has been around for 5,000 years!
The original Everglades used to reach all the way from the Orlando area to Florida Bay. It was a big wilderness of wetlands containing sawgrass marshes, freshwater sloughs, mangrove swamps, pine rocklands and hardwood hammocks.

Veterans' Day Lesson Plan

November 11, 2010
History
Today is Veterans' Day! "Veterans Day is an annual American holiday honoring military veterans. Both a federal holiday and a state holiday in all states, it is usually observed on November 11. ... It is also celebrated as Armistice Day or Remembrance Day in other parts of the world, falling on November 11, the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I. (Major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 with the German signing of the Armistice.)" The United States also celebrated Armistice Day on November 11th until Al King, an Emporia, Kansas shoe store owner campaigned to update it to 'All' Veterans Day. With the help of then U.S. Representative Ed Rees and President Dwight Eisenhower, "Congress amended this act on November 8, 1954, replacing 'Armistice' with Veterans, and it has been known as Veterans Day (official spelled without apostrophe) since." - Wikipedia
