Science

Talk about what horses eat. How is their diet different from humans, how is it the same?

Math

Show your child pictures of different types of horses. Explain that a racehorse is a special horse that is trained to run fast. Tell students a jockey is the person who rides the horse in a race. Explain that in a horse race, such as the Kentucky Derby, winners are determined by the order in which a horse and its jockey cross the finish line. The first horse and jockey to cross the line win first place and the biggest prize or purse. The next horse and jockey to cross the line comes in second and wins the second place prize. Prizes go to the horse and jockey that come in first, second, and third place. Put three horses in a row and ask the child to point to first, second, and third.

Art

Jockey Silks
In a horse race, a jockey can be identified by the colors and design of his or her silks. A silk is the shirt and cap they wear. The colors and design of the clothes each jockey wears in a race are different from those worn by the other jockeys.

Design your own jockey silk by either gluing precut shapes or drawing your own
on the picture of a jockey’s silk. On page 7 here:
